What is Shruti
Shruti
There may be innumerable Naad (Sounds) higher than each other in an octave, but they will be so close to each other that it will be impossible to hear them clearly and to distinguish between any two adjacent Shrutis or to play them. An attempt has been made to find out how many Naadas can be clearly recognized and sung in an octave. They unanimously determined that the traditional difference of not more than 22 Naads within an octave could be clearly identified and sung by the vocals.
That Naad which we can clearly hear, understand and can tell the difference between any two Naads is called Shruti.
Our scribes have rightly said; Shruti is that which we can hear and understand.
The scholars have considered such a difference between the twenty two Shrutis that the 23rd Shruti is exactly twice as high as the first Shruti. Because the second octave starts from the 23rd Shruti, thus the Naads are innumerable, but the Shrutis are only 22.
In other words, every Shruti is a Naad (Sound), but every Naad is not a Shruti. Only 22 Naads are called Shruti, hence the word Shruti is mostly used in music and not Naad.
Division of Shrutis into Swaras
The main seven Shrutis have been selected out of 22 Shrutis to be used properly. Which are called Shuddha Swaras. These seven Swaras are called Shadaj, Rishabh, Gandhar, Madhyam, Pancham, Dhaiwat and Nishad respectively. For convenience, these are referred to as Sa, Re, Ga, Ma, Pa, Dha and Ni respectively.
Now the question arises whether 22 Shrutis are spread at equal distance or at unequal distance? This problem has been in front of all the scholars of music from ancient times till today. India had experienced the same problem, western scholars have also done a lot of research on it. Almost all western scholars are in favor of unequal distance and some Indian scholars are in favor of equal distance.
Looking at this table it is clear that Ga is only two Shruti higher than its previous swar Re and Ni is higher than its previous swar (note) Dha. Hence Ga and Ni will become Komal. Due to the Komal of Ga and Ni, the ancient pure octave would be similar to the modern thaat.
In the above table only the Madhyam is two Shruti higher than the Gandhar. Therefore Ma can be called Komal for a while but the Ma swar is not komal. Its lowest form is Shuddha. Therefore the question of the Madhyam being Komal does not arise.
For this reason some old singers also call Shuddh Ma as Komal Ma, in fact both mean the same thing.
